Installing and Updating Symantec Endpoint Protection

Once you have completed the installation process, your computer will be protected by the latest available virus definitions with Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP). The LiveUpdate window will automatically open, begin updating, and notify you of its status.

To install any new updates, simply select the 'LiveUpdate' button on the left margin of the SEP window. This ensures that your system remains secure with the most recent virus definition updates.

You can also access the SEP user interface by clicking on the Symantec shield icon (yellow and black) in the Windows system tray or locating Symantec Endpoint Protection in the Windows program menu.

While manual updates are not typically necessary, it is easy to run a manual update if needed. If there are updates available, SEP will automatically download and install them. This is because Symantec Endpoint Protection, downloaded and installed from the UNM App Store, is preconfigured to periodically check for virus definition updates throughout the day provided an internet connection is active.

For UNM owned devices, a 'managed' version of the SEP client is available – please contact UNM IT at 50 or via Help.UNM for additional information. This managed client allows for centralized reporting and policy enforcement.

On the other hand, the 'unmanaged' client is intended for personal devices and should not be used on UNM owned devices. The version of Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) available on the UNM App Store is an unmanaged client – it does not report into UNM's Symantec server, which means centralized reporting and policy enforcement are not leveraged.
